MARKET TRENDS
All batteries sold into the EU must carry new labels by August 18, 2026, forcing global supply-chain compliance ahead of a 2027 passport mandate.

A sweeping labeling mandate under EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542 takes effect August 18, 2026, requiring every battery sold into the EU market to carry readable, visible labels detailing expected lifespan, chemical composition, and a QR code. Businesses worldwide are scrambling to meet the deadline. Failure to comply risks market access across one of the world's largest trading blocs.
Because the regulation applies to any battery entering the EU regardless of where it was produced, its reach extends well beyond Europe. Manufacturers, importers, and distributors are accelerating supply-chain audits, redesigning labels, pressing component suppliers to verify chemical data, and integrating QR connectivity into packaging workflows that were never designed for such requirements. Compliance is not optional.
The August deadline is only the opening stage. February 2027 brings the full digital battery passport obligation, requiring granular lifecycle and sustainability data to be accessible through standardized digital channels. That will create a new layer of recordkeeping and reporting responsibilities across the battery supply chain. Companies treating the current labeling deadline as preparation will be better positioned for the next phase.
Meanwhile, the window for compliance continues to narrow. Audits, testing, and label production all require significant lead times, meaning effective preparation needed to begin months ago. Smaller suppliers without dedicated regulatory teams face the greatest challenge.
Demand for traceability software, battery testing services, and regulatory consultancies is already rising. The European Commission's phased approach signals a long-term commitment to circular-economy principles and greater battery transparency. Organizations that move decisively now will be better placed as digital passport standards expand beyond the EU.
